Dogfish Chicory Stout (2011)

Last year I had a Chicory Stout that was beyond memorable—and I've waited nearly a year to be able to imbibe this seasonal brew once again. Its a dark-ish beer with a wisp of roasted chicory, a dash of organic Mexican coffee, a smidgeon hair of St. John's Wort, and whisper of licorice root. Brewed with whole-leaf Cascade and Fuggles hops, the grains include pale, roasted & oatmeal it presents a wily taste which is neither giant nor gentle.
I know small batches mean variations and different flavors emerge, but this year's batch (while an outstanding brew) just didn't have the glue from last year. I'm through my first bottle and I'll be sure to grab a few more before it leaves the winter's shelves. A sophisticated sipper.
An excellent porter to ward off the winter blues, but lacking the viscosity of a stout as well as its personality.
Pairs well with King Crimson, Little Milton and Curtis Mayfield.
