Howl Black Lager (Magic Hat Winter Seasonal 2012)

I recall the Zima Ice fads of the 80s and its all starting to smell a little Black to me. Black IPA, Black Lager, Black Stout, etc. I like Magic Hat as my go-to value priced supermarket craft brew--quality served up albeit a bit nondescript.
Howl Black Lager (pronounced as one word like LuciferBlackMass) is a perfectly fine brew. It has an appreciable gravitas which is respectable. More real than Sam Adams, fresher than Sierra Nevada and more personality than most Flying Dog Ales.
With all this going for it, this Black Lager fails to go further than a clean, drinkable pour. At your supermarket chain, it is more often the best bet (sans the Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout). Its a refined taste with plenty pop. If you like your lagers, this is worth checking out.
While I like the idea behind this brew, and the taste is well above board, this Black Lager holds a unique "Dr Pepper" taste which will draw many and repel few seeking refuge from winter's cold retreat. Pairs well with Prism, Al DiMieola and New Riders of the Purple Sage.
