Bell's Porter

I used to hate porters. I don't know what all I had tried, but they struck me as winey, watery and syrupy, all at the same time. Horrible. Now I know I've I just had some bad porters.

Mr. T. Rake has given the run-down on that benchmark of the porter style, Founder's, and he speaks the truth, it's pretty fantastic. But if you're looking for a porter with a little less heft, a little more lyricism, I'd suggest Bell's Porter. It's slightly lighter in body, flavor and alcohol content, but like the Founder's it has all the personality and complexity you need in a winter brew. I'm no expert in picking out the different flavor notes (maybe I detect some caramel in the finish?) but I can tell they're there and that they're well balanced. And that's good enough for me.
