Southern Tier Porter (2012)

I've been searching for a convincing budget porter. Even though Southern Tier's Porter has a bit of a rough start from the first sip—with metallic artifacts aplenty and a thin bloom—it eventually mellows and is better than many higher priced peers. There's no chance of this becoming your favorite beer, but your wallet will like ya for it anyways.

The run down: The flavors slouch toward caramel and grasp at chocolate, but never really deliver a punch. This indecision may vex the seasoned beer critic, but may well appeal to the dilettante. Passivity in moderation seems to be its only flaw.

It took a few bottles, but it did end up convincing me. Pairs well with Dizzy Gillespie bootlegs and sitar records.
