The Bomber (2011) is a Russian WWII epic just released on DVD in the states. The three hour plus film focuses on the true story of a Soviet bomber crew that was shot down over German-held Russian territory, and a small brigade of Russian partisans who simultaneously fought the Nazis using guerilla warfare. The adventures and misfortunes of the two groups intertwine throughout the film, woven skillfully by the talented Russian director Vitaliy Vorobiov. And that's just the subplot! The film, at its heart, is a wartime love story pitched against a tragedy involving a Soviet airman who betrays his country after being captured by the Nazis. It's a a P.O.V. on the war that has probably never seen by American audiences.
The Bomber was first released in May 2011 as an 8-part television mini series titled "The Ballad of the Bomber," and was later condensed to this 195 minute film version for release to the West. Now I have to track down the original version, which is available only without sub-titles at this writing. Anyone speak Russian? Вы говорите по-русски?
