The Bats - Free All The Monsters

1987 was a banner year for the Bats and this new LP finds them in fine form once again. While none of the of the following LPs resonated so strongly as Daddy's Highway, Free All The Monsters (Flying Nun) binds rock solid songs with and sparse production values. I like how the deep reverb provide some relief for the guitar; always yielding to the vocals. However, those yearning for another upbeat Couchmaster might be left wanting.
The LP starts strong, but does have a few weak patches where the inextricably leave the classic Bats sound for more straight-ahead fare.
Overall, the slower tempo of the record allows one to take in the sights and sounds of each sonic journey. Here, most of the sharper sonic edgers are tapered allowing the ear to glide over each note. NZ fans should delight in this new LP.
